Modafinil is a drug that is generally prescribed for patients experiencing sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and others. Many experiments showed that Modafinil was also effective in curing chronic fatigue disorder, ADHD and even in treating the withdrawal symptoms in persons who are recovering from a cocaine addiction.

At the same time, Modafinil has also been used on pilots of the United States Air Force. The purpose was to keep them alert and awake for a longer period during their missions. Studies done on sleep deprived subjects at the University of Pennsylvania revealed that a dose of Modafinil was enough to boost their reaction time and alertness for more than 80 hours. Yet, unlike many other stimulants such as amphetamines or caffeine, Modafinil doesn’t seem to have any side effects. You can imagine that it’s not very OK to have the jitters when you’re in charge not only with equipment that is worth a couple million dollars but also with your own life. The Indian Air Force and the British Army also looked into the advantages of Modafinil and managed to reap the benefits as well.

Speaking of “the jitters,” I found that a group of male doctors and surgeons were given doses of Modafinil after a night of sleep deprivation (of course, they were supervised). The result of the study was that the Modafinil made them less impulsive and more efficient with the tasks that require a set amount of attention – which, I believe, should be top place in their job description.

A sleep deprived doctor on drugs… doesn’t it boost up your confidence level? However, this drug has become pretty popular lately among cognitive enhancers and has overthrown Adderall as students’ choice to extend their study sessions and improve their learning abilities. Surveys show that around a quarter of the students going at top institutions have tried Modafinil at least once to help them in their studies. Investigations done at the Cambridge and Oxford Universities seem to support this claim as well.

The Modafinil Mode of Action

Aside from its already proven abilities to make us more alert and awake, Modafinil is also said to have an effect on norepinephrine and elevate the hypothalamic histamine levels. As a result, our memory retention gets a 10% boost through the influence of glutamate, the neurotransmitter.

Modafinil is also said to block the dopamine transporters, and as a result, increase the amount of dopamine in the brain. Why is this a good thing, you may ask? Well, it’s because Modafinil helps link the task with the result. Dopamine is generally the one responsible for maintaining our motivation level, being pretty much the reason why we are able of dragging ourselves to school or work every day; it’s the hope of the diploma or the money at the end of the month that’s keeping us up and running.

So how does NZT-48 work in contrast with Modafinil? Let us compare reality with fiction and see if it is possible. Modafinil makes us more alert, motivated and awake. Similarly, NZT-48 improves the brain function, memory (short and long term) as well as our analytical memory. NZT-48 apparently works by impacting the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system, elevating the synaptic sharing and receptivity between the amygdala, hippocampus, and striatum. Long story short and with less fancy terminology, NZT-48 can supposedly improve the memory up to 97.3%, boosting up the host cognitive ability and improving hand-eye coordination.

Modafinil Use Cases

We already know that modafinil is a smart drug that is used for wakefulness. But did you know that modafinil has other useful uses as well which we are going to discuss shortly? If you have been prescribed with modafinil then it’s important that you know about the other uses of modafinil as well.

1Occupational Use

Armed forces in several countries are often known to use modafinil as an alternative to another drug called amphetamine.  For, traditionally the drug amphetamine is employed to soldiers who are mostly active in combat situations where troops often suffer from sleep deprivation. Hence, on such lengthy missions, it is mandatory to stay alert and awake at all times in order to stay alive and not get shot down to death.

Astronauts too have been known to use mild prescriptions of modafinil on a long-term mission aboard the International Space Station. It is used to optimize performance when crew members suffer from drowsiness or fatigue. As of November, ’12, Modafinil has been approved as the only Air Force approved the go-to drug for fatigue management, while the earlier use of dextroamphetamine has been put to an end.

Off-label, some people use it as a recreation in order to stay awake during lengthy work schedules and events.

2Weight Loss

One of the amazing effects of modafinil is that it promotes weight loss as well. This effect can be seen in every person taking this smart drug on a regular basis. However, it may be considered to have an adverse effect on some people but at the same time other may find it very useful and be happy with the effect that reflects on them. According to some studies, it has been found that the use of modafinil can have a 10 point change in the body mass index in a year’s time.

Modafinil is known to reduce the appetite of an individual without causing any effect on the dopamine and norepinephrine level in the body. This basically implies that this particular drug has no harmful side-effects like an additional strain on the heart or high blood pressure. Modafinil has been found to boost the concentration of neuropeptide orexin in the central nervous system and brain. Orexin is known to regulate the appetite and wakefulness in an individual. Not only that, but it is also known to increase the production of histamine which helps in the regulation of arousal, appetite and waking up. All these together increases the level of these compounds which in return result in the inhibition of appetite in a person.

Modafinil is claimed to help in weight loss because of the fact that our bodies burn a lot of calories when it is awake or wakes up. Modafinil actually promotes the feeling of sleeping more in less time. It also keeps you alert every day and thus, it boosts your metabolism rate which in return results in weight loss. When you are awake for too long during the daytime your body burns more calories and thus, you end up losing weight. This way you will be able to promote a healthy and fit lifestyle with the use of modafinil.

Thus, you can see that how modafinil results in weight loss. This effect is common in every individual taking the drug. The only difference is that the rate of the effect is different in different individuals.

Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting drug that is prescribed to patients. However, it can do a lot more than that. Modafinil has the potential to treat a number of sleeping disorders which are mentioned above in the article. However, it is also often used for the treatment of ADHD. It is often prescribed to patients with ADHD. The drug is prescribed to patients of 18 years of age or older. However, this treatment is not yet have been approved by the FDA. According to some reports, the drug is known to have shown positive effects in cases of ADHD. The drug is still under study in order to find out it’s complete and true effects on ADHD.

Doctors can actually prescribe modafinil to ADHD patients if they feel the need to do so. This should be interesting for you to know but modafinil is actually a stimulant based ADHD drug. Well, this is what makes it extremely unique and more effective than other ASHD drugs that exist out there. This is one of the main reasons why modafinil is used for the treatment of ADHD.

When you take modafinil, it feels mentally stimulating just like you feel after having a strong cup of coffee. However, it doesn’t provide you with physical stimulation that you would have derived from other ADHD drugs. When consuming modafinil your brain should feel focused.

People suffering from the problem of ADHD is known to have a neurodevelopmental condition that makes it hard for them to accomplish basic tasks like working, driving and even socializing. The fact that modafinil is a wakefulness or a eugeroic drug, it is considered to be effective for the treatment of ADHD symptoms. However, one should know that modafinil is a fairly new medicine therefore, it is still under study. There are a lot of things that are yet to be found out about this particular medicine. But for the time being, modafinil can be used as a drug for the treatment of ADHD. It increases the level of histamine in your body which makes you feel more awake all the time. Well, that pretty much gives you the idea that how modafinil is going to be useful in the case of ADHD.

Studies have also shown that modafinil selectively increases the level of dopamine in your brain. Regardless of any of these facts, it can be said that modafinil is increasingly becoming popular as a drug that can be used for the treatment of ADHD symptoms. In fact, it is considered to be one of the potential treatments for ADHD in today’s times.

Depression is something that is dealt with by most people due to various reasons in life. Most people are, however, shy to admit that they suffer from depression. In the fear that they will not be understood people tend to shy away from admitting this fact. People suffering from depression are required to be provided with help. There are several drugs that are available for the treatment of depression. However, the drug that we are concerned about here is modafinil. Modafinil is considered to be one of the most promising drugs for the treatment of depression.

According to studies, it has been found that people who were given modafinil have proved to be very effective in dealing with depression. Modafinil as well know is used for the treatment of sleeping disorders. It is being combined with anti-depressants in order to have a severe impact on reducing depression in individuals. It is being found that anti-depressants are less effective when taken separately. Anti-depressants, when taken with modafinil, is proved to be more effective. In fact, patients who were given a combination of the same has shown remarkable improvements. Thus, it can be said that patients struggling with depression can be given a dose of modafinil along with other anti-depressants. However, more studies are required to be conducted in order to find the true effects of modafinil in patients dealing with depression.

Well, these are three of the main uses of modafinil other than using it is a smart drug for wakefulness. After going through the above discussion it can be said that modafinil is indeed a useful drug that can take care of multiple things in a person. The best thing about the drug is that it doesn’t have any side-effect to worry about. Unless you mixed with the wrong kind of drug, Modafinil is completely safe to use.

Thus, from the above discussion, it can be concluded that Modafinil is indeed a smart drug that can do a lot more than just treating sleeping disorders in patients. However, it is advised that you should consult your doctor first before, you actually start taking the drug in order to avoid any possible complications that you may face.

Side Effects

NZT-48 had a couple of, let us say, ‘inconvenient’ side effects. Sure, it made you smarter and able to remember a book that you randomly saw 20 years ago in a library, but then it could also make your brain go through total blanks if you weren’t careful enough. In Limitless, Eddie went through various moments when time passed too fast – and he had no memory of it happening. It’s the classical drunken blackout where he does things he will later not remember, along with hallucinations, nausea and an overall feeling of sickness. Smart drug or not, everything comes with the price, and the law of equivalent exchange says that you have to give some in order to get some. So NZT took the “some” by itself.

What about Modafinil? Does it make you hallucinate or lose your sense of time like NZT-48 does? On the surface, there doesn’t seem to be any significant side effects. Sure, there’s always a risk of an allergic reaction or a conflict with another drug that you may be taking. However, when it comes to noticeable, general side effects, there should be nothing. At least, not in the short term.

Modafinil doesn’t have any addictive properties, and if you had one slipped into your morning tea, you would probably go about with your day without even realizing that you took anything. There shouldn’t be any withdrawal symptoms, even after using it for a longer time, so where’s the catch? At first look, it seems just as perfect as NZT, but is it really?

Well, let’s take a logical look at this. If you continuously stay up past your bedtime, not only will it annoy your parents, but it will throw your sleeping pattern off the rails. Generally, we need to be careful with drugs that artificially modify our serotonin and dopamine levels. Abusing them would make our brains ‘forget’ how it was supposed to release these substances on its own, leaving us with a major case of addiction, depression or anxiety. I’m pretty sure that those symptoms bear the back pains, dizziness, nausea or upset stomach feeling that other users may have complained about.

Sure, Modafinil doesn’t express the classic signs of addiction, but there’s a reason why it is generally sold by prescription (although you can purchase it online as well). If it didn’t have a couple of dangers along with it, then everyone could have been able to buy the drug – but doctors are careful about that. Who knows, it may be the safest drug on the market – or it could be the thing that slowly turns our world into a usual episode of The Walking Dead. It depends on how good of a player you are at the Russian roulette.
